10 full trail days, about 70 miles and lots of elevation changes.
The Crew had a hike today from Hilltop Reservation in North Caldwell to Mills reservation in Cedar Grove. While not the most difficult of Hikes, they did cover almost 11 miles in full packs. Not a bad day.
And a few pictures from the Hike…
And planning for the next hike:
We mentioned that the next hike would be a bit more difficult.
I am thinking about the State Line Trail and a loop around Surprise Lake.
Here are some links to the trail and elevation changes from when I last did it (March 2008). This would be March 10th 2012.
Crew 59 is very lucky. On July 26th 2012 we will be at base camp in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains – Philmont Scout Ranch.
We are now at the time that we have to confirm who is going.
As I mentioned back in February (see the article here) Philmont is a very special place. At that time, the Crew decided we would go. We put in a deposit, and we now have to send in a (rather large) payment. This means I need to confirm everyone that is going.
I have a list of people who confirmed they were going either verbally or by filling out the forms at the bottom of this post. I have received money from some, but not everyone. I thank those who have been on top of this. Now we need to get everyone to do the same. I will go over the names and details at our Crew Meeting tomorrow night (7pm, West Caldwell Presbyterian Church)
For anyone that has not signed up, there is still room on the Crew for more. This is an opportunity should not be missed.
It is all about the TREK!!
Philmont Scout Ranch is a one of a kind place. There is no other place in scouting where you can experience the hiking and program opportunity that Philmont has.
Philmont has spectacular hiking. Base Camp is a scout city unlike any place you have been to (unless you have been there before). The Philmont Experience is all about what you want it to be. Philmont has programs that are nowhere (well, almost) to be found other than at Philmont.
There is black powder rifle and Spar Climbing:
Throwing hawks, working as a crew to climb the wall::
Just to mention a few program activities.
And then there is the hiking, and climbing:
Being on the edge of the world and on Top of the World with your Crew:
Not to mention the cooking and the impromptu exploring:
(you can click on the photos for full size views)
Truly the opportunities are limitless. While at Philmont, each night your camp site is set and you will have program activities. However, the day is yours. If you want a side hike you can do it. You make the trek your own.
But don’t trust me. Ask a scout that has been there. It is an opportunity that is not to be missed.
The Next Steps:
We must confirm our exact number with Philmont and send Money in by September 30th. Please see me at our next meeting or call me if you cannot be there.
As mentioned above here are the forms. The exact cost will be confirmed once I have the final list of names so we can purchase the airline tickets.
I can be reached for questions any time.
At our last meeting there was quite a great deal accomplished.
First off we elected new Officers. They are:
Congratulations and best of luck to all.
Our next meeting will be Thursday July 7th at Sabrina’s house. At this meeting we will be planning our next event (Hershey Park) and will also be bringing the Spud Gun out. Sabrina has an elevated shooting platform and this should make things interesting. We will be arranging car pools to Sabrina’s house, expect to here from Nora via text message.
Our next activity will be Hershey Park. We will be leaving on Friday July 15th, camping in the area and then going to the park at night. July 16th we will spend the day at Hershey. As long as there are 10 of us confirmed by July 7th at 2pm we can order discounted tickets. Please email me at email@example.com as soon as you know you can go.
Please check out the website for Hershey Park. The camp site is about 6 miles away. we will be doing “light camping” — drive in, set up, sleep, take down in the morning– cooking will be up to you or we can budget for eating all meals in the park and surrounding area.
Costs will be determined at the meeting, but it should be around $40-45 for camping and admission. We need to set a budget for the food.
August will have a camping trip August 11th -12th. We are planning to include some canoeing in the Culver Gap or Delaware Water Gap area. Details will be set at the next meeting.
Call Mr. Cristiano with any questions and watch for text updates.
